In early 2023, the Philippines faced one of its worst environmental disasters—the Mindoro oil spill. A sunken tanker leaked thousands of liters of industrial fuel into the sea, coating the once-thriving fishing waters of Oriental Mindoro in black sludge. Mangroves, coral reefs, and marine sanctuaries suffered immense damage. Coastal communities, heavily reliant on fishing and tourism, were left in economic ruin.

For Miguel Ramos, a marine engineer from Batangas, the disaster was a wake-up call. Having spent over a decade working on offshore oil rigs, he knew the Philippines was dangerously unprepared for oil spills. The country lacked a local supplier of high-quality spill response equipment, forcing authorities to rely on slow and costly international shipments.

Determined to change this, Miguel founded GS Oceanguard Inc. in 2024—a Filipino-owned company dedicated to providing oil spill containment and response solutions. His mission was clear: equip the country with the tools and expertise to protect its marine ecosystems before the next disaster struck.

Building GS Oceanguard Inc. from the Ground Up

Starting with a small warehouse in Sta Ana Manila, Miguel and a team of environmentalists and engineers sourced essential oil spill containment equipment—booms, skimmers, absorbents, and dispersants—from trusted international manufacturers.

They partnered with the Philippine Coast Guard, local government units, and private industries to establish rapid response protocols. They also launched training programs for port authorities and fishing cooperatives, teaching them how to deploy oil spill equipment before damage escalated.

However, breaking into the industry wasn’t easy. Many oil and shipping companies had never invested in local spill response solutions, relying instead on emergency imports. Miguel worked tirelessly, advocating for stronger regulations that required local oil spill preparedness measures for industries operating near Philippine waters.

His persistence paid off. Within just a year, GS Oceanguard Inc. became the leading supplier of oil spill response equipment in the country, reducing the nation’s dependence on foreign aid and improving emergency response times.
