Recent Oil Spills in the Philippines

MT Terranova - Limay, Bataan

On July 25 2024, the MT Terranova capsized and sank 6.7km off the coast of Limay, Bataan. It was carrying over 1,500,000 Liters of Industrial Oil which if spilled would have made it the biggest Oil Spill in Philippines history. The Oil Spill reached 2 kilometers in length. Estimates by Department of Agriculture calculate total damages to the fishing industry in excess of P78,000,000 and affecting over 28,000 people.

MT Princess Empress

On February 28, 2023 the MT Princess Empress sank in Oriental Mindoro carrying 900,000 liters of industrial fuel (black oil, highly toxic to the environment) had an oil spill that reached Antique, Batangas, Oriental Mindoro and Palawan. The economic damage was estimated in excess of P9,520,000,000 to coral reefs, mangroves and agriculture.
